* Dennis has been around computers since his 6 year stint in the army starting way back in 1972 when he trained as a battery surveyor for 11 Battery RNZA.
A battery surveyor's role is to figure out where to aim the artillery weapons so that they hit the target. You could think of it more as a navigation role. Artillery weapons generally cannot "see" their target, and the surveyors role is to provide, bearing, elevation, amount of charge, allowance for weather while the shell is in the air, allowance for barrel wear, time of flight for fuses etc.
The calculations were based on advanced maths like trigonometry etc. It was possible to do this math manually or on a slide rule, but when programmable calculators and computer equipment became available it got a lot easier and more accurate. These days all of this is now done with more modern electronics and GPS systems etc.

These "navigation" skills had other applications later in life, and applied directly to him obtaining a Private Pilots license and a Coastal Yachtmasters Ticket where navigation and weather are very important facets.

In the late 70's he brought computers into his Road Transport business and eventually in the late 80's he wrote the software for a freight management system.
These-days he no longer develops software - rather his passion is to help businesses get the most from their technology. After all productivity is King.
